Haunt Fans Sell Out 13th Hour Summer Scare

Haunt Fans Sell Out 13th Hour
Wharton, NJ —By Chuck Mound- The license plates in the parking lot of 13th Hour Haunted House in Wharton, NJ read New York, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Maryland, and Ohio to name a few.  Haunt Fans traveled from all over the northeast to attend the 13th Hour Haunted House and Escape Rooms Summer Scare held on August 1st, 2020 in Wharton, New Jersey.

The event was very well organized by 13th Hour Haunted House Owner Steve Bailey and his Staff. The event was well attended by Haunted House Fans as every time slot was Sold Out.  With the Halloween Season quickly approaching, many are wondering how and if Haunted Houses would be able to open. “This was a great success all around” says Bailey “We had nothing but great feedback from all of the customers and it gives us hope that we can provide a good Haunt Season during these times”

Guests were asked to pre purchase tickets online at 13thhour.com and select a time slot, which were offered every half hour. Time Slots sold out fast as they were operating at only 25 percent capacity based on NJ State Regulations for Indoor Entertainment Venues. Upon Arrival, guests would proceed to the Ticket Booth, which were protected by a thick plexy glass, and scan their tickets for entry. The outdoor Cue lines were all Social Distanced with 6 feet between each group while masks were worn. Hand Sanitizer was readily available as well as gloves for those guests who requested them.

Haunter Riley Gates of Maryland, who was a guest actor was at 13th Hour playing the Fearleader, greeted the guests as they approached the ticket booth. “With the masks and social distancing rules, you have to really challenge yourself as an actor because you have to try to scare using different techniques” says Gates “It is also hard to get a read on the guests because of the masks, so you cannot see their facial expressions and you have to rely only on their body language” added Gates. Gates got your attention immediately as she would sprint towards you and at the last second would slide across the pavement using her knee pads and hand pads that would provide sparks.

Haunt Fans

You would typically start your 13th Hour Adventure at the highly popular time machine, that is a crowd favorite during the Halloween season, but was not in use for Sumer Scream 20 to avoid any clusters and to keep the groups moving through the Haunted House. The time machine provides that whole back story of the Haunted House based on the Hayden Family that is presented by award winning Haunt actor Matt Byrd, who plays Louey Lazarus. One of the big aspects that Haunts pride themselves on during the season is the amount of Actors that work inside the House, but with Covid, this game plan needed to be modified. “We cut our acting staff in half” says Bailey, “this limited the number of people inside the house at one time”.

Photo By Lights and Sound Media

You would think that this would play a major role in the quality of the Haunted House, but this was not the case. All of the actors at 13th Hour are multi year veterans who have hundreds of hours of Haunt Acting Experience and it showed. Led by acting director Christopher DeTroy the scares were around every corner while all actors in the Haunted House wore masks and practiced social distancing. Perfect placement of Animatronics with the constant audio soundtrack that seemed to pace your every step with anticipation of what was around the next corner. Each Set design was better than the next. So many new set designs for the 2020 season includes the Exorcist set, Church scene and the Swamp that uses an amazing laser effect.

Jeff Gabriele, a Halloween Enthusiast, drove from West Deptford in South Jersey to experience Summer Scare at 13th Hour. “They totally redid scenes and props” said Gabriele “they had a whole ritual scene that was great and an exorcism scene and not to mention Clowns, wasteland, creepy dolls, hillbilly butchers, monsters, marionettes and more” says Gabriele “One of the better indoor Haunts out there and defiantly worth the trip”

Just when you finish the first floor of fears, you go through 2 more Haunted Attractions called the Attic, followed by Darkness where you navigate through the Haunted maze with the lights out. Screams and Scares that provided 45 minutes of constant Halloween entertainment.

Scott Lucas Jr was on the scene as Co owner of Stay Safe Sanitizing out of Hackettstown, NJ to keep the Haunted House highly sanitized. “We have been spraying down the Haunted House every 30 minutes with Hospital grade sanitizer” says Lucas “ We use the best machines in the business that provides a misting spray that covers a larger area upon application”

The Haunt Fans that were in attendance were very respectful of the rules and regulations and went above and beyond.

13th Hour Haunted House and Escape Rooms will be entering its 9th Season in Business.  “We had a great night” says 13th Hour Haunted House owner Steve Baily, “This was an important night for the Haunt Industry to show that we can all be open while practicing the safe guidelines that have been presented”.

For those who Fear that Halloween will be cancelled this season, you have some hope as the team at 13th Hour Haunted House proved that Haunted Houses can be open during a pandemic by following all of the safe and effective guidelines presented.

Mid Summer Scare at 13th Hour

Wharton, NJ —You can say that 2020 has served up more scares than any other year in modern history. But if you are in need of some scares that are more on the traditional sense, with the feel of the Halloween season, then look no further than the13th Hour Haunted House located on West Dewy Ave in Wharton, NJ. For one night only on Saturday, August 1st, 2020 a special event called the Mid Summer Scare will provide a taste of Haunt season 2020 as they will be the First Haunted Attraction in New Jersey that will open its doors since the Covid 19 Pandemic has reared its Ugly Face.

This is a good way to see where we are at” says 13th Hour Haunted House Owner Steve Bailey, “ After being shut down for almost 4 months, we want to make sure we have everything in place for the upcoming Halloween Season” says Bailey

Haunted Attractions Fall under the category of Indoor Entertainment in the State of New Jersey. “We can operate within 25 Percent Capacity and must follow all CDC guidelines” says Bailey. 13th Hour Haunted House has taken many precautions to make the Haunted Attraction as safe as possible for both the guests and actors.

We will be cutting our staff of actors in half to limit the number of people inside the Haunted House” says Bailey. For most Haunted Attractions this might be a big issue, but over the many years in business, 13th Hour has managed to build a Haunted House with 2 floors that is packed with state of the art animatronics, props and set designs that leave customers wanting more. In fact, in 2019 Bailey added a third Haunted Attraction at 13th Hour with a Dark Maze.“This is such a good Haunted Attraction and is always one of the best in New Jersey” says Pat Regan, President of the National Haunters Association, “ The House itself is such a great attraction as it has Hollywood type sets within each room and around every corner”.

Even actors at other Haunted Attractions praise the work that has been done by Bailey. “I enjoyed the sets at 13th Hour Haunted House” says Valerie Wierzbicki, who has been a Haunt Actor for over 7 Years and currently works at the Hotel of Horror in Saylorsburg, PA. “the one room with all of the Mirrors and the floor spinning is always my favorite” added Wierzbicki.

13th Hour has re opened their Escape Rooms this past week and they have been impressed with the customers.

People get it and are defiantly doing their part” says Bailey “ We have had a lot of small groups participate in our escape rooms this past week and they all have been great in following all of the guidelines”.

Some of the other guidelines that are in place include Masks must be worn at all times. If you need a mask, one will be provided by 13th Hour. All of the Actors will be wearing masks and will be practicing 6 feet social distancing. Gloves will be available for any customer as well. Just like amusement parks and theme parks who sanitize rides each hour, 13th Hour will follow the same practices as they will be sanitizing the props and sets every hour.

Social Distancing will be practiced by the actors and is expected by the guests. Timed Ticketing for the event will help limited the number of people that are on lines to enter the Haunted House.

You can buy your ticket on line that will be Timed Ticketing with 30 minute intervals between each of the time slots. 7:30, 8:00, 8:30, 9:00, 9:30, 10:00. Totaling 6 Time Slots that will be available. For more information go to 13th Hour

Haunt Hunters App
Forest of Fear 2018 Preview
Tuxedo Park, NY --Forest of Fear 2018 Preview- Sometimes Mother Nature packs a punch more powerful than the after world and for the 2018 season of Forrest of Fear, the punch was more that they could overcome. The management at Forest of Fear has announced that they will not have a 2018 Haunt season due to the damage that occurred from all of the rainfall during the summer months. The Main Haunted House which sets the stage for Forest of Fear was destroyed with flooding and was deemed unsafe. This is a big hit for a Haunt that has been a staple in the industry for years and has produced a solid Haunted Attraction year after year. If you have traveled to this Haunt, you can relate to how dark the roads you travel to get to the location. The location itself is very creepy in its nature as the grounds are part of the Ren Fair in the Summer. The setting promotes a fun Halloween Experience. One of the top Haunt Actors from the 2016 Haunt Season came from the Forest of Fear. The Mannequin part was played to perfection at the finale of the Haunted House. One of the most unique Midways in the Haunt Industry was located at Forest of Fear. Many different vendors and side show acts such as the AX Throwing was something that was no other Haunt was doing. This always added to the carnival like atomosphere Some of the vendors included artist Tina Brown who custom makes one of a kind Halloween Dolls. Brown creates the Annabelle Doll each year for the Haunt Hunters that is awarded to the highest graded Haunted Attraction in Times Square, New York City at the Annual Chuck Mound Bigtime Awards. Forest of Fear will be missed for the 2018 Haunt Season and is expected to be back stronger in 2019.

Horseman's Hollow 2018 Preview
Sleepy Hollow, NY -- Horseman's Hollow 2018 Preview-The story of the Headless Horseman has been told many different ways and at many different locations across the country. However, there is only one Sleepy Hollow, NY where the legend was born. A place where the entire community embraces the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and transforms to a Halloween Destination each and every Halloween season and the 2018 Haunt season is no different. There are so many different Fall and Halloween type activities that are offered at Sleepy Hollow. One of which is the Horseman’s Hollow Haunted Attraction. The backdrop and natural scenery of Sleepy Hollow cannot be replicated anywhere. Add natures beauty of the fall foliage and you have an epic setting to tell the story of the Headless Horseman. This is achieved with a high level theatrical production of the story through a set of mazes located at Historic Philipsburgh Manor. The costumes and sets are highly detailed to help transform the grounds into a fun Halloween playground. “We have a lot of actors who have a theater background” says director Lance Hollowell “this is an important aspect to our Haunted Attraction, our actors entertain first.” This is a unique approach in the industry because most places look to scare you first. It becomes all about who can be the scariest. But, fear is what you want it and make it to be. This Haunted Attraction manages to wow you in another way than all of the others. The sets are really well thought out and deliver on a different level than your traditional Haunted House. Many people visit Sleepy Hollow during the Halloween season that the toughest aspect to the Haunted Attraction is line management. You could miss some of the scares when you get caught up with different groups. The groups get backed up sometimes because the sets are really that good and the actors interact with the visitors, which makes you part of the story line. Schmitts Farm Haunted House Preview 2018
Schmitts Farm Haunted House Preview 2018 Melville, NY - It took a few years for the Haunt Hunters to get out to Long Island to see how Haunts are done out on the Island and Schmitts Farm Haunted House was a great start. As part of ScreamLI.com that includes a group of the best Haunts on Long Island, Schmitts Farm offers 2 Main Haunted Attractions with their signature Haunted House and their Haunted Hayride. This place is defiantly a high energy Haunt from the Midway to the Houses. You should arrive and get your tickets early because this is the place to be in Long Island during the Halloween season. This place is packed with energy and excitement, which is exactly like the Haunted House. As you wait in line, you get to watch classic horror movies play on an enormous screen. Line entertainment is throughout the midway while there is a lot of cool side items such as Horror themed motorcycles and possibly the best Mobile Haunted House on 4 wheels that is used to promote the Haunt during the season. This old Hurst actually had a replica of the Schmidtt’s Farm Haunt House on top of the vehicle, which is one of a kind and a must see while you are there. The Haunt is super high energy, they pack a ton of scares within each square foot of this space. Music is pumping as the sub woofers do their job and shake the whole Haunt. The most impressive is one of the best executed sets of the 2017 season with the swamp set. They managed to take a well known laser technology in the Haunt industry and maximize its full potential with this set. One of the best uses if not the best use that has been seen in the industry. Without any spoiler’s, just keep your guard up once you enter the swamp. The actors do an excellent job of brining the scares in all directions. This was a great start to the Long Island Haunts with a great staff and solid local/regional Haunted Attraction.

Halls of Horror Preview 2018
Halls of Horror Preview 2018
Palmerton, PA- Halls of Horror Preview 2018. Part of the Haunted Attraction experience during the Halloween season is always physically getting there. The only way to get to some of these towns with Haunts is through the Pennsylvania Mountains. This particular trip brings you through some picturesque locations like Route 66, before you suddenly find yourself on main street of a town. The Nun room and the room of Mannequins surely will provide some new screams. This Haunt thinks way outside the box and the entire cast feeds off their passion for the Halloween season. They are able to pull off some really unique aspects that most Haunts have a tough time executing. Creepy is a forgotten aspect in Haunting, if something can make you feel uncomfortable, it becomes Scary. Anticipation : Where you filled with anticipation of what lies around the next corner. Laughter : Scary can make you laugh to release some of your anxiety, so if you begin to laugh as you walk through the Halls, you will know why.  Intimate Spaces invade your space. This in itself creates anxiety and fear. Halls of Horror has all of these aspects and more. This Haunt proves that you don’t necessarily need the biggest space to have a great Haunt. It’s making the most of what you have, and they do that and more. Blood Experience: The Blood Experience is truly unique and one of a kind at the Halls of Horror. Dorney Park Haunt 2018
Dorney Park Haunt
Allentown, PA - Dorney Park Haunt 2018-Dorney Park Haunt is entering its 27th year and was one of the first theme parks to introduce Halloween themed events. This experience has allowed Dorney Park to provide some great screams and develop epic sets over the years. The actors are a tight group that spend a lot of time in the off season working on their craft for the Halloween season. 13th Hour Haunted House

13th Hour Haunted House
Wharton, NJ -13th Hour Haunted House. The Haunted Scarehouse is now 13th Hour Haunted House and Escape Rooms. Everything is the same as years past, well maybe not everything, you can always count on Haunt owner Steve Bailey to come up with something super creative in the 13th Hour before the opening of the 2018 Haunt season. Last season an expanded midway added to a carnival like atmosphere at 13th Hour. Games, Funnel Cakes and custom made chocolates by Marge provided hours of fun and of course scares. Bailey is a unique artist in the world of Haunted Attractions. He has the ability to take an idea in his mind, transfer it to his hands to build these elaborate sets with extreme detail. Any fan of Haunted Attractions could easily pick up on these details that he creates. Another way Bailey targets your senses is that he has a great soundtrack that plays as you walk through the house. Like a great horror movie, this continues to build on your anxieties and fears until the scares are unleashed . Don’t forget 13th Hour is 2 floors of fear, once you complete the base level of the haunt, you make your way upstairs to the Attic. One of the only New Jersey Haunted Attractions that has a second level.  Weather is not an issue at 13th Hour, you are protected and covered from the conditions. This is outside at least, once you enter 13th hour, you become part of the Haunt. Special Events: If you have not experienced the great Escape Rooms at 13th Hour, its worth giving it a try. The details in the rooms are incredible and with a group of friends, they are really fun. Brighton Asylum Preview
Passaic, NJ - Brighton Asylum owner Rich Allen had a plan when he first started building his Haunted Attraction. The plan involved growing and feeding his Asylum each and every year. Allen has followed this plan with precision, passion and that had fed his monster that has now grown into a beast.  With the continued expansion of Brighton Asylum, you will now be able to enjoy this Haunt on three different levels. Go through the Tunnel to explore the lower level of the Asylum. The Main Level will bring you through the Asylum itself, while the Bleeding Grounds is the latest addition to Brighton Asylum. With the Escape Rooms and Horror Museum, Brighton is taking the shape of a Scream Park.  You can expect high energy screams and scares with Hollywood style sets. In fact  one of the additions from last season is part of the pre Haunt experience called the Brighton Research and Development Center. The schedule included a kids night and service appreciation night. “We try to do things differently at Blood Shed Farms” says Bisch, “its not all about Animatronics, we try to incorporate a variety of scares”. The story lines are well thought out and allow those who visit Blood Shed a variety of opportunities to have different experiences. One of the most unique is purchasing a ticket for the Blood Shed where one person is admitted into the Shed while the rest of the group watches via night vision camera on a side monitor. There is a total of 4 different Haunted Attractions, one of which is a Haunted Hayride on the Last Ride. The others include Clown O Phobia, Hellsgate Aylum and the Trail of Terror. They have also added an 15 Minute Escape Room called the Camper and many different acts that will be performing throughout the Halloween Season. Blood Shed Farms has the main ingredient for success in this industry, which is Passion. This has been contagious to the staff of 100 + actors who join in the same enthusiasm. Blood Shed Farms Fearfest in South Jersey is on the Haunt Hunters Tour for 2017. 2017 Opening Night is on October 6, followed by October 7,8,13,14,20,21,22,27,28,29, for a total of 11 Dates.

Ambrosio's deliver Haunts

Book of Haunts
Head of Haunt

Saylorsburg, PA - Every year Haunt owners descend upon Transworld In St Louis, Missouri for the National Convention of Haunted Attractions looking for the next biggest and baddest prop that they can purchase to include in their Haunt. Transworld offers Haunt owners the so many different products from makeup and masks to props and animatronics.  "If we go to transworld and buy the next biggest prop, then we have what everyone else has" says M Ambrosio, who has been a Haunt owner for 10 years, " we don't want to be like everyone else". Considering the location of the Hotel of Horror, an abandoned Lake House in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, they are not like everyone else.

For Dan and Marlo Ambrosio, the owners of Hotel of Horror in Saylorsburg, PA, the next big thing lies within the creativity of their actors, who have managed to stay together as a team for 10 years. They  push their boundaries in the industry and push each other. "We don't have a big turnover of actors" says M.Abrosio, "this season in particulate, we only had 4 openings." This speaks volumes in the industry because often times Haunted Attractions have to replace their actors every season. It is like the Free Agency of Football, but this is not the case at Hotel of Horror. The actor retention rate is very high and this allows them to deliver a great experience.

"We exhaust ourselves in all that we do to provide a great experience for the customer" says M Ambrosio "we have such a great team of actors that do such a great job every night". So good is the acting that one of the Actors Tony Massa received the Best Actor Award from the Nationally Recognized Haunt Hunters for his character Toukatsu. A role that required him to learn Japanese and employ the rare Susuki acting method.

If you have experienced the Hotel of Horror, it goes without saying that there is some paranormal activity that takes place. There is a presence that seems to follow you throughout the Hotel. "We don't really talk about it too much, or exploit the whole ghost thing, but there is a energy that  drives us evert night" says M.Ambrosio "It allows us to work amongst them."

The Ambrosio's are in their 10th year of being Haunt Owners, while the Hotel of Horror Haunt is celebrating its 25th Season. Their Passion for the Haunt Industry is at the highest levels and that provides the foundation for success. Book your room now for your stay at the Hotel of Horror.

Hotel of Horror Top 3

Haunt Hunters App
Hotel of Horror

Saylorsburg, PA-- Hotel of Horror finished in the Top 3 Indoor Haunted Attractions for the 2016 season and is looking to compete for the Annabelle Trophy this Haunt Season. This Haunted Attraction has it all. Authenticity is off the charts as you make your way throughout this abandoned Lake House in the Poncono Mountains. By walking through an actual house, you are bringing true meaning to Haunted House. No temporary walls are set up here, you walk upstairs, downstairs, in and out of roans, to the attic and basement and more. The owners empower their actors by allowing them to define their rooms that they Haunt. This allows great creativity and ownership of the actors who are very passionate about their Haunt.  So much so that Actor Tony Massa won the 2016 Best Actor Award for his role of Toukatsu. This is a great accomplishment considering there were over 2,000 actors who were competing for this title. Massa learned Japanese for his role and executed the rare Susuki acting method. This goes well beyond any type of animotronic or Halloween mask, when you enter his room at the Hotel of Horror, you become immersed in the room and in the Haunt. Hotel of Horror has all of the ingredients to compete for Annabelle this season. But make no mistake about it, trophy or no trophy, this is an A graded Haunt and it should be on your Haunt Tour 2017. Buy your tickets early for this one.

Book of Haunts

Looking at the Haunted House itself, there are many new additions that have been added for the 2017 season starting with the new  Attraction Containment (Tunnels). This attraction takes you through a 1,200 foot long gauntlet underneath the Pennhurst complex.  For those of you keeping track of your steps, thats 400 yards, equal to 4 football fields in length.  Stationed as a government facility hidden underground for decades, you will bare witness to patients being experimented on in the most inhumane ways possible. Lucky for you, this research facility is still accepting patients! The brand new sets and scares of this attraction are guaranteed to produce horrifying screams and nightmares to come. These hidden tunnels seemed to be a standard blueprint for most of the Asylums from back in the day. Greystone Mental Institute in Morris Plains, NJ, had the same type of tunnel system when it was still standing. Politics played a major part in its demise as it is now a parking lot.  This looks to be another great addition to Pennhurst Asylum Haunted House.

Young Pennhurst ready to Haunt

Haunt Hunters App
Pennhurst Asylum Haunted House

Springlake, PA- Pennhurst Asylum Haunt House might be considered a young Haunt in the world of Haunted Attractions as they enter season seven, but the energy that it has been drawing upon is anything but young. Built in 1908, Pennhurst was built as a school  to help those on all ends of the Mental Illness spectrum. But what was intended as a solution, quickly turned into a place that was beyond overcrowded, understaffed and underfunded.  This led to years of horrific conditions that finally sealed the doors on all of the buildings on the 100 acre property in 1989.  The acreage can lead you to underground tunnels that seem  endless and to buildings that have captured the history within its walls and if you listen close enough, you may capture one of the thousands of stories that want to be told.

Pennhurst Asylum Haunted Attraction has been listening to the spirits that roam the grounds of Pennhurst and the Haunt fans who appreciate history and entertainment  opened its doors in 2010 and has been gathering the energy and spirit since its inception. This type of Authenticity is something that cannot be replicated or reproduced.  It is what can bring a Haunted Attraction into a category of its own.

All of the props that are used are original pieces that were saved from the original school. "We are very respectful of the History of Pennhurst" says Actress Valerie Wierzbicki "we offer different programs that will allow you to experience Pennhurst in so many different ways" added Wierzbicki. New Ownership took over last season and with one season under their belt, they are committed to keep moving forward with new and innovative things.

This Haunt transforms part of grounds and brings you back to 1930 that composes of four different Attractions that are part of the Pennhurst Haunt and it is intended to be experienced in this order. The Asylum is where you will meet one of the iconic characters Dr. Webber. Who know what types of experiments that he has waiting for your. The Second phase is the Dungeon and third is the tunnel, which is the most intense part of the Haunt where the famous Genvieve roams. The dungeon houses the more volatile patients as well as treatments and experiments gone wrong. It is the underbelly of the Asylum, dark, twisted and sinister.
The fourth attraction provides access to the Mayflower Building, which has been investigated and deemed Haunted by numerous paranormal investigators including Zack Fagens of  Haunt Adventures.  This will include a Museum that will be run by historian Ruth Hines, a former employee of Pennhurst, which is a new aspect of the Haunt this season. This Haunt has built a tremendous reputation and following in the Haunted Attractions world.

Over 230 extremely dedicated and passionate staff bring Pennhurst to life. Led by General Managers Kara Lightcap and Jim Warner with Julie Kruc with Makeup & Wardrobe : The New Owners have invested a lot of money to provide property manager Neil Young with all of the tools needed in order to continue to make improvements in all aspects of the Haunt. "Many of the Sets have been rebuilt and will give our return customers something to look forward to" says Young  "We have added some features that you can only experience at Pennhurst and we are looking forward to the upcoming 2017 season".

There are no Touch Sticks at Pennhurst, so every night is contact night. However, a highly trained staff ensures your safety.  " We go through a lot of training" says Wierzbicki  "One of the things that we are known for is never breaking character".  The writing appears to be on the walls at Pennhurst Asylum Haunted House, this young Haunt is ready to deliver and compete on a National Level.
